Cobra is an extremely reliable specialty merchant, as can a store like Son-Vidéo.com, for example. They’re the only ones offering such a terrible promotion on the S95B: this TV, which retails for around €2,500 everywhere else, is a few hundred euros more.

Explanations of OLED technology

Before describing in detail what QD-OLED technology is all about, it seems important to us to put things into their context. First, let’s talk a little about OLED technology.

stands for OLED Organic Light Emitting Diode. Technically, an OLED panel has nothing to do with the classic LCD panel still found in most TVs. In conventional TVs, the filters are placed in a large backlight panel that reflects white light. With OLED, there is no need for a backlight panel because the “organic diodes” can emit their own light.

Hear it right: With OLED, each pixel on the screen controls its light individually. If black should be displayed, the diode is simply not lit. The level of contrast achieved is therefore literally infinite. OLED also allows for more vivid and accurate colors as it is affected by the white light panel. Finally, OLED allows for better viewing angles, lower power consumption, and thinner screens.

As you can imagine, the production of this technology is complex. Thus, only one factory in the world has been able to produce large OLED panels for years: the LG factory. Until last year, LG supplied all its competitors with OLED panels. And then, in 2022, Samsung entered the race with its own version of OLED: QD OLED.

What is QD-OLED in Samsung S95B?

To get to the point, we spare you the very technical details based on the blue subpixels in a triangular shape: QD-OLED covers an unparalleled color space and, above all, promises a brightness never before achieved in OLED.

It doesn’t seem like much, but it changes everything. In its early years, OLED had 2 flaws:

  • 1. When a live and static image remains for too long (a bright red life bar, a continuous news channel logo…), it can “burn in” the screen and be etched on the TV for life. Nowadays, manufacturers have put a lot of things in place so that this problem does not arise anymore (automatic cleaning of pixels, detection of risk areas, alternating active pixels, reduction of brightness, etc.). Mission successful : so-called problems burn belongs to the past.
  • 2. Removing the backlight panel is nice, but it’s hard to achieve very high brightness levels without it. To fully enjoy a 4K OLED TV, it is better to be in the dark. While Samsung managed to exceed 2,000 lumens per square meter on its Mini-LED TVs, OLED struggled to reach 1,000 peak brightness.. Placing an OLED TV in a room full of direct light was a big challenge… until last year and the arrival of QD-OLED, among other things.
