The Nintendo Switch is very different from its competitors in terms of hardware. It features a modified Nvidia Tegra X1 platform – an ARM processor for mobile devices similar to the chips in high-end phones and tablets – while the PlayStation and Xbox consoles all favor more conventional computing power.

While the Switch has a 6.2-inch screen, the Switch OLEDs are larger (7 inches) (and higher-quality OLEDs), and the Switch Lite shrinks that down to 5.5 inches. The main difference is that the Switch Lite does not have detachable Joy-Con controllers unlike the other two versions of the Switch. It’s also a permanent handheld console—there’s no dock that lets you connect it to a TV like the other Switches do.

The Switch has the potential to run at 1080p 60fps when games are installed and fed to a TV, and 720p 60fps on its internal display while on the move. On the standard Xbox One S and PS4, most games today run at 1080p, some even hitting 60 frames per second.

The PS4 Pro and Xbox One X are capable of upscaling this resolution to 4K at 60 frames per second. All Xbox and PlayStation consoles are also capable of outputting high dynamic range (HDR) graphics. The Switch can’t compete with these consoles, nor can it keep up with the graphics performance.

In terms of the Nintendo Switch’s ability to carry a certain advantage over its direct competitors. It functions as both a home console and a portable gaming console. Therefore, it is the only game you can take on a trip to play the same games on its integrated 6.2-inch screen. And as we mentioned, Lite is intended for portable use only.

Disks and memory

It comes with Xbox One S, Xbox One X, PS4 Pro and PS4 physical disc drives. Xbox One consoles are also capable of playing 4K Ultra HD Blu-rays. Sony, even as a founding member of the Blu-ray Disc Association, decided not to add a 4K Blu-ray player to either PS4. They can still play regular 1080p Blu-ray discs, but not Ultra HD discs.

The Nintendo Switch can do neither. The Japanese firm has chosen to go completely discless and offer games on cartridges, just like the previous 3DS and Nintendo consoles.

Games are also available through download stores, but given Nintendo’s stinginess with onboard storage, you’ll need to invest in a microSD card to store more than two games at once.

The Xbox One S originally came in 500GB, though the 1TB version is the standard model you’ll find in stores these days. The Xbox One X also comes with a 1TB hard drive.

The latest PS4 comes in at 500GB and 1TB, while the PS4 Pro is a 1TB console. All Xbox and PlayStation machines have the ability to expand storage capacity with third-party hard drives via an external USB 3.0 HDD. Also, all PS4 models can be expanded by swapping out the internal 3.5-inch drives.

The Switch, on the other hand, has 32 GB of internal memory. Big name games, especially games from Nintendo, often take up at least half of that capacity.

Games

When it comes to the amount of games, the Xbox One and PS4 consoles may win for some since they have been around for several years. The Nintendo Switch is younger in comparison.

However, the Switch’s lineup remains very healthy. This is due to greater support from developers and publishers than Nintendo’s last console, the Wii U, and a large number of great releases from that era.

Quality is more subjective. Nintendo offers true triple-A titles like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Super Mario Odyssey, and Animal Crossing: New that you won’t find on any other platform (besides the defunct Wii U). Horizons.

Of course, Xbox and PlayStation have their own exclusives like Forza Horizon 5 and Gears 5 on Xbox One and Marvel’s Spider-Man and God of War on PS4.

One area the Nintendo Switch hopes to improve on is big cross-platform games.

On the other hand, the Switch beats its rivals in the field of action games. While the other two stray far from this format, the Switch follows the Wii’s legacy with clip-on Joy-Con controllers that act as motion controllers. This allowed families to return to Nintendo in droves.

There’s also Ring Fit Adventure, which comes with a foot strap where you insert one of the Nintendo Switch’s Joy-Cons. This is a fitness game designed to increase your activity.

Media

All Xbox One and PS4 consoles are excellent media streamers as well as gaming machines. They both have Netflix and Amazon Video, while the Xbox One S and Xbox One X both offer 4K HDR and Dolby Vision on some compatible TVs. PS4 Pro also offers Netflix in 4K HDR.

BBC iPlayer and other terrestrial TV catch-up services are also available on consoles. Apple TV is now available on Xbox One.

Nintendo Switch doesn’t have any of these services. It has a YouTube app, but no sign of Netflix or Amazon on the horizon right now.

Packages

It’s no secret that when looking to buy a new console, there’s no such thing as a great bundle to get the best value. Whether it’s an extra controller for multiplayer, a few hit games or more, this is a great way to start a little further from square one.

The good news is that all three consoles (and their variants) have some great bundles to choose from, although the exact selection is constantly changing. Luckily, we have an article for each to make sure you can choose the best one for you.

The result

Obviously, the Nintendo Switch, Switch OLED, and Switch Lite are very different game consoles than other machines. In many ways, the Switch can be considered a second, portable console for hardcore gamers.

Action-based gameplay – like Ring Fit Adventure – can be a big draw, especially if family-oriented games are your cup of tea. This is one area where Nintendo excelled with the Wii, so it offered something different than the Xbox 360 and PS3 of the time. The same goes for the Wii.

The biggest obstacle is the price, with the main switch being the youngest, significantly more expensive than the standard Xbox One S and PS4. However, the Switch Lite is priced closer to Microsoft and Sony at around $200.

If you have a 4K HDR TV, you should definitely consider saving a few extra pennies for a PS4 Pro or Xbox One X. Games run better on these consoles and with improved graphics, games are simply beautiful to watch. , not to mention the games.

If you want something a little more upgradeable, don’t forget to consider the PS5 or Xbox Series S or Xi – for us, it would be a Switch or a next-gen console for now, if you can find one in stock somewhere.
