Prediction Oxford United – Arsenal 09/01/2023
This weekend’s 32nd FA Cup final matches were marked by the entry of Premier League clubs into the competition. Unlike the French Cup, where Clermont (Ligue 1) were eliminated by a regional team (Strasbourg), the Premier League clubs did not suffer surprise defeats against the little fingers this weekend.
The final match will be tonight at 9:00 PM. Premier League leaders Arsenal travel to fifteenth-placed Oxford in League One (third division).

Oxford: relevance and form
In the summer of 2016, Oxford United joined England’s Third Division after spending many years in the lower divisions, even dropping to fifth in the country and losing professional status in the late 2000s. They finished 3rd in 2020 and 6th in 2021, losing in the playoffs each time and missing the final spot.
In the league, the yellow-blacks have two defeats and one success. Defeats were against Ipswich Town (0:3, third) and Exeter City (0:1, eleventh). Meanwhile, Oxford beat Charlton 3-1 (3-1, twelfth).
Oxford’s last five games:
D–V–D–NO–NO
This season, for the sixth consecutive season, the team coached by Karl Robinson is in the soft belly of the tournament table. Oxford are currently 15th in the 24-team league and are unlikely to have anything to play for at the end of the season. Oxford are also no longer involved in the EFL Cup and EFL Trophy.
Therefore, the game against Arsenal in the FA Cup is probably the last big event of the season for Oxford United. In the first round, the “yellow and black” won against the fifth division club “Woking” in mid-November (2:1). In the second round, Oxford then dramatically eliminated fellow League One resident Exeter City 4–1. Billy Bodin, 30, is Oxford’s top scorer in the FA Cup with three goals in two games. In contrast, the winger scored just 4 goals in 21 games in the league.
Arsenal: news and form
The FA Cup is Arsenal’s favorite competition. The North London club have already won the trophy 14 times, making them the most successful club in the competition. The last time the Gunners achieved this was in the 2019/20 season when Arsenal won the final against Chelsea thanks to two goals from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. Last season, Mikel Arteta’s team was defeated in the third round by losing 1-0 at Nottingham Forest, who played in the second division.
This year, Arsenal cannot experience the same failure again. If the Gunners can maintain their form in the league, this will not happen. Arsenal have been leading the Premier League since the fourth round and have only one defeat and two draws so far. The Gunners drew 0-0 with Newcastle United last Tuesday.
Arsenal’s last five games:
NO–V–V–V–D
If we compare the offensive and defensive records, hardly anyone can beat Arsenal in the Premier League this season. With 40 goals, Arsenal have the second best attack after Manchester City (45). With so many assets, Arsenal do not depend on any one player to score goals. Both Martinelli and Ødegaard scored seven times in the league. They were joined by Saka and Isa with six and five goals respectively.
Arsenal also have the second best defense in the league with just 14 goals conceded, only bettered by Newcastle and their 11 goals conceded. Aaron Ramsdale, the goalkeeper of the Three Lions, forms a solid block accompanied by his defense, young but already experienced (Agh, Saliba, Gabriel, Zinchenko).

Arsenal’s priority this season should be the championship and Arteta will need to rotate his workforce heavily. Regular substitutes should be able to beat a third division team.

In the Premier League, “Arsenal” was the leader at halftime in 10 of the 17 games played this season. We can think that the Gunners will try to take the lead from the break in order to live more comfortably in the second half.
