TOP 12 trends and products of CES 2023
CES 2023 is drawing to a close, leaving many announcements behind. So, which one can’t be missed? Here’s our pick.
Here we are at the return of CES 2023, it’s time for reckoning. After nearly 100 articles devoted to show news, we have selected 12 trends from the world’s biggest tech show.
While the products and demonstrations on display at CES 2023 don’t always reflect the technology you’ll be able to buy in the near future, the show does give a look at where tech giants are spending their time and resources.
Heavier, more powerful and better performing laptops
At CES 2023, Nvidia introduced the new GeForce RTX 40 for laptops. The announcement was accompanied by dozens of laptops from Dell Alienware, Acer, Asus, Razer, Lenovo and more. What we’ll remember from these frankly power-packed machines is that frames have never been this wide or thin. We end up with a range of laptops with 18-inch diagonal screens, such as Asus, Acer (Helios 18) or even Razer (Blade 18).

They are generally IPS screens with 240 Hz and QHD resolution (1440p) with delicate borders and 16:10 aspect ratios. As a result, 15 and 17-inch formats are replaced by 16- and 18-inch models.
Folding computers are still anecdotal
In 2022, we tested the Asus ZenBook 17 Fold OLED, a laptop with a folding screen. It was the first computer with a foldable display marketed by Asus and one of the first in the market with rival Lenovo. We could say that laptops with folding screens will proliferate in the market in 2023… This is still very much anecdotal.

We’ve come across foldable screens designed for laptops, which shows that they’re getting more and more attention. However, laptop manufacturers have yet to follow suit en masse. If you can’t fold, Lenovo also introduced the Yoga Book i9 laptop, which features two OLED screens with a very visible hinge.

External PC monitors have never looked so good
If there’s one area that’s revolutionized, it’s external displays for computers. Monitors are now equipped with 240 Hz and even 540 Hz (Asus ROG Swift Pro PG248QP) in Mini LED or OLED.

Samsung has introduced two personal computer screens. The first is a 57-inch ultra-wide screen in 32:9 format, and the other is an ultra-wide screen in QD-OLED. Both screens are cut for gaming. LG company introduced the first 240 Hz OLED screen. In short, 2023 may allow you to change your gaming setup.

The return of glasses-free 3D
What could have been trick it was a nice surprise. Indeed, we’ve come across a few glasses-free 3D screens that are 2000s technology. We were impressed by two Asus laptops.
The result is absolutely stunning and makes you feel even more connected to what you’re watching and driving. It’s a unique experience that brings a new dimension to content creation. If you pick up the stylus and you can move 3D objects a few centimeters away from your eyes. You feel like you can actually touch them.
The battle for OLED brightness
In the halls of CES 2023, a pitched battle is underway. The battle of LG and Samsung is a battle as old as the world between the two Korean giants. Since the arrival of QD-OLED from Samsung in 2022, LG and other TV manufacturers such as Samsung and Panasonic are doing everything to have the brightest OLED screens. LG introduced its Meta technology, which we return to in a single file, while Panasonic promises big things with the MZ2000.

The promise of these screens is to reach record brightness peaks of 1,500 to 2,100 cd/m² (candelas per square meter), with the best screens of 2022 barely exceeding 1,000 cd/m². OLED, in fact, is becoming more and more reliable competition in the face of the qualities of Mini LED.
Wireless and TVs
Manufacturers want to cut TV cords. We came across two surprising products. The first is a concept born in the laboratory of an American startup, they equipped the OLED panel with batteries and removed all the connectors from the TV. Everything is deported in a remote box.

LG has introduced a different TV, a huge 97-inch 4K OLED (Meta) screen that is not 100% wireless because it is connected to the network. On the other hand, all data streams (video and audio) go through the Zero Connect box, which does not connect to the TV with any cables. LG OLED M ” the world’s first wireless OLED TV “.
Mini LED installed
After timid interventions like the iPad Pro 12.3, MacBook Pro 14 and 16, the Mini LED is coming to the computer world en masse. We could find them on the Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 and Razer Blade 16, and we found them on external screens as well.

Remember that Mini LED is an LED display technology where the back panel is covered with multiple LEDs. This allows not only to achieve an incredible level of contrast, but also to significantly reduce the blooming of this bright halo that overshadows the most illuminated areas. This makes it a very interesting alternative to OLED. We also got to see the latest Samsung Neo QLED, which is impressive.
8K resists
8K is not popular in Europe, these screens consume a lot and the European Union wants to limit the abuse. That doesn’t stop this technology from continuing to evolve, CES 2023 was also an opportunity to launch two 8K video projectors. One in Hisense and the other in Samsung.

They are 8K Ultra HD ultra-short throw laser projectors to be precise. At Samsung, it’s called the Premiere with a 150-inch display. At Hisense, it’s the Laser TV 8K 120LX, which can display a 120-inch image. Note that this is not native 8K, but the image is obtained from a 4K matrix with pixel extrapolation. It is also very expensive, calculate 28,000 euros for the Hisense.
Asian and American markets continue to show interest in 8K TVs. The challenge for manufacturers is to maintain the same display performance while limiting the consumption of these huge TVs.
The car infotainment system is being modernized
This did not go unnoticed. The new version of Android Auto has been eagerly awaited for months. Google unveiled a partial redesign of its infotainment system at Google I/O in May 2022. CES 2023 allowed us to discover this new interface that adapts to different screen sizes and formats of electric and non-electric cars. Another big innovation the ability to customize the screen by dividing into different parts. Therefore, it is possible to use Spotify or YouTube Music while following Google Maps navigation, as seen in the presentation video.
BMW, in turn, made it official The arrival of the iDrive 9 system. And the first car to benefit from this will not be one of the manufacturer’s flagship models like the new BMW i7, but the “small” X1 SUV.
The BMW 5 Series or 7 Series and most BMW models have Linux-based systems, while the new X1 and the upcoming X2 and the future Mini have Android Automotive-based systems, as expected for several months.
Batteries are everywhere
Of course, Chinese battery manufacturers use this to sell power plants. These products offer solutions for different situations: for nomads, it is a transportable energy source that can be charged at home with solar panels, but also can allow 100% independence from the external grid. For example, to save money.
Finally, there is no telling when the world will descend into chaos, especially when the Doomsday Clock is 100 seconds past midnight. But on a less dramatic note, storms and power crises can cause power outages.
These products have been particularly highlighted in the context of the risk of power outages in France, the recent winter storm in North America, and especially the war in Ukraine.

We saw a lot at CES 2023! Now including the latest EcoFlow products with features. EcoFlow boasts of creating the world’s first robotic lawnmower. We didn’t get into the nitty-gritty of the terms chosen in the press release because robotic lawnmowers already exist. EcoFlow Glacier is a portable refrigerator equipped with an integrated ice maker. It produces 18 small ice cubes in just 12 minutes and can last up to 24 hours (297 Wh) on a single charge to keep food fresh. EcoFlow also introduces the second generation of its portable air conditioner, now reversible (so it can heat).
The PlayStation car is coming!
It’s not exactly a PlayStation car, but the Afeela is a collaboration between Sony and Honda. This prototype will indeed go on sale in 2025, we got a very close look at it.
MagSafe works on Android
The announcement was a little overlooked, but the Qi 2 was introduced. This universal wireless charging standard will adopt Apple’s MagSafe technology.
MagSafe is the spiritual evolution of Qi charging found in many devices. Apple has added a circular magnet to its phone. The latter plays both the role of support and serves to align the induction coils more accurately. This increases the charging power to 15W versus 7.5W on Qi.
Matter takes its course
Matter officially started last year. There’s still a lot we don’t know about Matter, and we won’t until Matter-enabled products are updated in our homes, apps, and ecosystems. This is exactly what is happening now.
Technically, Matter is a smart home interoperability protocol. In other words, it is a common language that helps objects communicate with each other. It’s not an entirely new protocol, Matter is more of an implementation layer on top of the existing Wi-Fi and Thread protocols. Its advantage is that it is open source, so it has been adopted by almost everyone.

We saw a lot of Matte products at CES 2023. For example, Nanoleaf launched compatible switches. Samsung introduced the SmartThings Matter hub in the form of a wireless charger. In short, don’t expect to spend your whole house on Matter. Implementation of this standard will take time and will not be as simple as expected.
