Twitter lets you see how many people have seen your tweet

The past few months have been a confusing and confusing time for even the most avid Twitter user. Twitter has undergone several feature changes and policy updates since new CEO Elon Musk took over the controversial social media platform in late October. The most recent example of a significant move away from Twitter is Twitter’s decision to ban what it describes as “Twitter”.free promotion of some social media platforms“.

Although Twitter quickly backtracked on the rule, the policy effectively banned people from sharing links to rival platforms like Mastodon, Facebook or Instagram.

Upon his adoption, Musk promised several feature additions to Twitter, including long-requested ones such as the ability to write longer posts or edit tweets. In November 2022, Musk also shared his vision for what he called Twitter 2.0, where the platform would provide better advertising opportunities for brands, enable end-to-end encryption of DMs, and update its subscription service. However, Twitter’s Blue subscription soon ran into problems, and Twitter later removed the feature.

In early December, Musk relaunched Twitter Blue subscriptions for anyone who had paid for the service, giving them the ability to check a “verified” box and access exclusive features.

It was another feature that Musk discussed in the Twitter acquisition saga allows users to see the number of views of their tweets. As of December 22, 2022, this feature is available for users worldwide.

Visible to all

on December 22, 2022 several Twitter users have reported that a view counter appears on individual tweets. As users clicked and expanded their tweets, a view counter began to appear. Accounts that have received this update can see a view counter right next to the Like and Retweet buttons. Later that day, Musk confirmed that the much-sought-after “view counter” feature is finally available to everyone. He claims that this feature will allow users to know how “alive” the platform is.

Twitter already had a similar view counter for videos uploaded to the platform for some time. However, it should be noted that the view counter is different from the “Tweet Analytics” feature, which has been around for several years. The latter allowed Twitter users to check the performance of their tweets, but was still a few clicks away and not directly searchable.

Another key difference with the new view counter is that, unlike personal scans, the number of views is visible to everyone.

Multiple views

Regarding the important question of what is considered shipping, the company shows in a new twitter help center page : “Anyone who views your tweet will count as a view, regardless of where they saw your tweet (eg Home, Search, Profiles, Tweets embedded in articles, etc.) or whether or not they follow you. Even an author who views his tweet counts as a view“.

He adds: “If you view a tweet more than once, multiple views can be counted, but not all views are unique. For example, you can follow a tweet on the web and then on your smartphone, and that will count as two views.. ยป

Given the chaos Musk has caused since buying Twitter in late October, this new feature seems like the least controversial thing to happen in a while.
