Trinity College: Ireland’s most prestigious university
Trinity College or Trinity College Dublin University was founded in 1592 by Queen Elizabeth I, making it the oldest university in Ireland. Trinity College is located in the heart of Ireland’s capital, Dublin, on College Green, opposite the Old Irish Parliament.
The university has more than 18,000 students, including 3,700 international students from more than 120 countries. Trinity College houses the famous Book of Kells, an illuminated manuscript of the Gospels from the 9th century. The institution also has a tradition of producing Nobel laureates including Samuel Beckett, Ernest Walton and Brian Josephson. A must visit historical place!
Trinity is the only university in Dublin that is open to the public, so don’t hesitate to go there, especially since it’s full of historical treasures!
The old library (or Old Library) Trinity College is particularly popular Long roommore than 60 meters long and the library contains more than 200,000 oldest books.
The library also has the Book of Kells (or The Book of Kells), an illuminated manuscript of the Gospels from the 9th century. This book is considered one of the finest examples of Celtic art.
There are also houses in the Long Room the harp Trinity College, Ireland’s oldest musical instrument, dating back to the 14th or 15th century.
According to the story, it remained in the papal collection until 1521, when Pope Leo sent it to King Henry VIII of England to celebrate his new title of “defender of the faith.”
The harp would have several owners until it was gifted by William Conyngham to Trinity College Dublin in 1782 and is now on display in the Long Room Library.
